The national teams of Sweden, Denmark, and Ukraine have secured their places in the Grand Final of the European Team Speedway Championship, scheduled for June 28 at 2:30 PM at the Zbigniew Podlecki Stadium in Gdańsk. They will be joined by the defending champions, Poland, completing the lineup of teams competing for medals. On Saturday, the A and B Finals of the tournament were held on the tracks in Pardubice and Elgane.
A small surprise occurred in the Czech Republic, where Ukraine earned their spot in the final. The ambitious team, led by Serhii Holovnia, scored 38 points on the Pardubice track, with as many as seventeen of those coming from Nazar Parnytskyi. That total was enough for the Ukrainians to advance, as Norway—second in the Elgane event—accumulated just 37 points.
– We were waiting for news from Northern Europe and we are very happy. We had a good competition in Pardubice, and every rider did their job. The Grand Final will be a great challenge, but I promise we will give it our best. In the difficult situation our country is in, sporting successes definitely lift the national spirit – said Serhii Holovnia, manager of Ukrainian Team.
On the Pardubice track, the Danish team dominated. Led by Nicki Pedersen, they arrived in the Czech Republic with a strong lineup and fulfilled their role as favorites. The host team, however, performed poorly. The competition began with bad luck for Václav Milík, who crashed in his first heat and withdrew after his second ride. Jan Kvěch also struggled, and aside from Daniel Klíma, the rest of the team underperformed. They only managed to finish ahead of the French, who were weakened by the absence of injured David Bellego.
In the second Saturday tournament, the Swedes were dominant. The Norwegians fought hard until the very end to qualify, but fell just short. The youthful German and Latvian teams had little to say in Elgane.
In the Grand Final, scheduled for June 28 at 2:30 PM in Gdańsk, the Danish, Ukrainian, and Swedish teams will be joined by the Polish team, which has won all three previous editions of the European Team Speedway Championship. Ticket sales for the event will begin next week.
